Lautoka, Fiji – November 26, 2024 – Fiji Gas, in collaboration with Obayashi Corporation (Japan) and Halcyon Power (New Zealand), successfully launched the Hydrogen Dual-Fuel Generator Demonstration Project at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka today. This innovative project represents a bold step toward a sustainable and decarbonized future for Fiji and the Pacific region.
The project showcases a pioneering use of green hydrogen, produced from geothermal energy in New Zealand, in a dual-fuel generator. This marks the first demonstration of its kind in the Pacific Islands. The event highlighted Fiji’s commitment to sustainability and its alignment with the government’s Low Emission Development Strategy 2018–2050.
The event was attended by industry leaders, government representatives, and local community members, with opening remarks delivered by Sonal Reddy, National Sales Manager at Fiji Gas. Guests participated in a traditional Fijian opening ceremony, followed by presentations from key project partners.

The event concluded with a site visit to the Fiji Gas Lautoka Terminal, where guests witnessed the dual-fuel generator in operation. The demonstration also included insights into the project’s logistics, from green hydrogen production in New Zealand to its transportation and utilization in Fiji.
This initiative is supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as part of its global decarbonization efforts, reinforcing Fiji’s position as a leader in sustainable energy innovation.
